Medical Team at Chest Diseases Hospital Successfully Performs Complex Catheter Procedure on an 80-Year-Old Patient

Chest Diseases Hospital has successfully performed a highly complex and groundbreaking heart catheterization procedure, the first of its kind in Kuwait and the Middle East, on an 80-year-old patient.

Dr. Abdullah Al-Anzi, Head of the Cardiology Department at Chest Diseases Hospital, stated that the patient, in his eighth decade of life, suffered from multiple health conditions, including a previous heart surgery to replace arteries and an aortic valve with a tissue valve. Over time, the valve became severely narrowed, threatening the patient's life. Consequently, a new valve had to be implanted to save his life. Dr. Al-Anzi noted that the best option was to replace the valve through a catheter procedure.

He explained that replacing the valve through open-heart surgery carries a very high risk, which is why the catheter-based procedure was the preferred option. However, due to the patient's high risk of a major coronary artery obstruction during the valve replacement, a modern and complex procedure called "Basilica" was performed. This involves making an incision in the damaged valve to prevent coronary artery blockage during the catheter procedure. The Basilica technique is rarely performed worldwide due to its complexity.

Dr. Al-Anzi emphasized that the success of this operation opens the door for many patients to benefit from this procedure.

Dr. Khaled Al-Mari, Head of the Catheterization Unit at the hospital, added that the procedure was performed under general anesthesia with the assistance of heart ultrasound guided by endoscopy, conducted by Dr. Khaled Borsly, the head of the heart ultrasound unit. He praised the Ministry of Health for its ongoing support in enhancing medical services in Kuwait.

The team that performed the surgery included Dr. Khaled Al-Mari, Dr. Abdullah Al-Anzi, Dr. Ibrahim Al-Rashdan, Dr. Khaled Borsly, and Dr. Dharar Al-Khader.

Chest Diseases Hospital is a leader in valve implantation via catheter and began performing these procedures in 2009, acquiring extensive expertise over the years in this field and in handling complex cases.
